Case Management Special Populations

Special Populations Case managers help serve the vulnerable populations. Vulnerable populations may include the elderly, people with physical disabilities; young children and those with serve mental disabilities. This is done through a process that involves intake, assessment, intervention planning, advocacy and much more. A case manger over all helps a client through referral and resource information. This paper will discuss and focus on a very vulnerable population, young children. Through research this paper will focus on five main points.

First, information about the population that was chosen will be discussed, how and why the population was of interest, how case management is used to help this population, what limitations and strength’s can be brought to the case management of this populations and lastly potential multicultural issues and solutions will be looked into. The Very Young The vulnerable population that has been chosen to research is the very young, children. This population is vulnerable because often a child does not have a voice and is to young to begin to understand and deal with family and life situations.

These situations may include, domestic violence, drug abuse and neglect. These type of clients need advocacy and resources to help them be in a safe nurturing environment. Some children may be taken from their homes and parents and placed in long or short term care in order to protect them. Those children who are taken away for a long-term situation are given care till they reach an independent age. A child who may be taken on a short-term plan will need to receive resources and support by extended family or foster parents. This population has coping difficulties because they are so young and do not really understand what is going on.

Area Of Interest This vulnerable population was chosen as an area of interest for a few reasons. First, I have always had an interest in helping better the lives of those who do not have a voice and are not heard, this mostly includes children. I feel that because of my trial and tribulations as a young child I can relate and understand the who, what, where, when and why of what children are going through when they experience trauma in their life. It began when I was only four years old; I became a victim of human trafficking at the hand of my Mothers Husband. During the next twelve years I endured hysical, sexual and mental abuse by those I trusted. I never had a voice or some one to be a voice for me. At the age of sixteen I was done and ready to fight back, I no longer looked at myself as a victim but rather a solider in a war, and I started to wage a war against my enemies. I reached out and was saved. I finally had the voiced I needed to help me rise above. Through lots of therapy, counseling and healing I have become strong and determined to help every child I can, I want to be their voice. Now with the tools from my education and experience I am ready to help those who are vulnerable, especially the very young.

Children are so innocent and often fall victim to harsh realities of life at such a young age. I want to change that, I want to fix things before they happen, I want to help change laws and pass certain laws that will better protect our children. Using Case Management To help. Using case management I would help this population by providing services and programs that help children cope and get through problems and situations they may be facing. I would advocate and fight for them fully according to the law. This may include going to court proceedings and filing petitions.

As a case manger I would help a child live a protective nurturing life. This happens by working with them and giving them tools and resources necessary to accomplish this goal. A resource and tool may include therapy, foster parents, counseling and advocacy. Overall, I would listen, provide guidance and be a support system for that child. Limitations and Strengths. At first I thought that through my education and because of my life experience I would bring only strengths to case management to this population. One of my biggest personal strengths includes being able to understand how a child feels when they are lost and alone.

I will easily be able to identify and understand some of their hardship and furthermore help them get through there dilemmas. However, it would be foolish of me to think that there would no limitations. I will begin to focus on potential limitations, as I am not yet aware of these limitations because I have yet to experience them. One limitation that may present a problem is emotional boundaries. As any human being, I am filled with emotions especially when it come to things I am passionate about this include helping children. My emotions may cause barriers and interfere and perhaps cause limitations.

This is more of a personal limitation, a limitation that may present it self in the work place may include resources, funding and time. These limitations may be out of my hands and depend of the department I would be working with. Multicultural Issues and Solutions. A successful relationship between you and a client comes from many different things. One of theses things is understanding and respecting not only the clients needs but about their cultural differences. This is important because you want to make sure you understand certain unique issues that may be affecting the client.

For example as a social worker it would be important to understand that things like moral issues and legal issues in regard to client who is Native American. According to an article I found on the Internet a human service worker must be culturally competent as followed •“The human services provider must be knowledgeable about the group in question; •The human services provider must be able to be self-reflective and to recognize biases within himself or herself and within the profession; •The human services provider must be able to integrate this knowledge and reflection with practice skills. (Browne, Broderick, & Fong, 1993; Sue, Arredondo, & McDavis, 1992; Weaver & Wodarski, 1995; Weaver, 1997) If a caseworker does not become culturally competent they may be putting themselves and their client in danger. The solution is to become familiarized with the client’s culture, ask questions and get interested. Final Thoughts. Overall case managers deal with vulnerable populations on a day-to-day basis.

It is important to understand things like limitations and strengths, and multicultural issues and potential solutions to insure great success of not only the client but for yourself as a caseworker.
