Alcohol advertisements should be banned from TV Alcohol Advertisements is the promotion of alcohol beverages by alcohol producers through ads on TV and also in a variety of media. It is one of the most famous forms of marketing and it is one of the major businesses in today’s economy. The question is why alcohol advertisements should be banned from TV? One might say that children or young audience influence from observing parents’ behaviour and they are the significant role models to follow in their lives but alcohol advertisements is also an important source through with children have learned about this.
Alcohol advertisements can have different effects and these are the main reasons. Firstly, in the experience of young audience, money matters, health issues and similarly concerns with family problems, alcohol addiction, sex and peer pressure are inter-related to this in many ways. All of these effects seem to be increasing and we need changes for our society and especially for the future generation. As an Auckland University survey showed that from 18 and 19-years-olds were now the heaviest drinking group in the country (Johnston 2001).

These effects take many and varied forms but I would guess that alcohol advertising could affect any person who would watch or hear but it just depends on it the person is willing to try it or believe what the ad is telling them to do. As we know that young teenagers are more influence than adults for example, life experience. This is one area in which alcohol industry had faced in their alleged targeting of young people and there are often concentrations of alcohol ads aimed at youth than at adults.
While the young people report more positive feelings about drinking and their own likelihood to drink after viewing alcohol ads (Austin, Grube, 1994 in: http://www. answers. com/topic/alcohol-advertising). However having this feeling may get them through alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse. This has become of the most complex and life threatening. Through my research I found that mostly all alcohol advertisements are for teenagers to view. After watching these advertisements, young teenagers try to follow these activities shown in the ads which most likely are illegal.
Some of these activities which are being shown in the ads are like date rapes, sexual activities and peer pressure. To prevent all these activities, alcohol advertisement should be banned from TV. In some cases, on the New Zealand herald stated that a student from King’s College has been died from drinking alcohol on the night of their school ball (Binning, Wade, 2011). Some people got stress from work or family problems. People usually say that that it is ok once but this exception can make them addicted to alcohol.
This is likely referring to the alcohol ads after watching these ads they just want to get out there to buy the product and just try it out. Once they have tried it, if they liked it they can become such of alcohol addiction and then that person starts abusing alcohol and then they begin to disregard his/her responsibility in school, at work, or socially because of alcohol use. Some people have lost their jobs from alcohol abuse they just handle the addiction that they have on alcohol.
This may leads them to some money difficulties because they got no jobs, but they got kids to feed the house rent to pay and also their everyday needs for the family. Peer pressure is one of a powerful predictor of alcohol use among teens and also stress is another reason why teens may feel they should drink. These risk factors such as alcohol abusers may engage in dangerous activities while intoxicated such as driving and also having sex with lots of partners while drunk. These effects may all starts by the encouragement and some specific specials from alcohol ads on TV.
This is why I agree that alcohol advertisements should be banned from TV. As a fact that some children can influence drinking of their beliefs, attitude and behaviours from parents because some parents they can let their children to have a sip while drinking and this can cause them to drink more. However alcohol advertisement encourages them to drink more because they can see it on TV and when they see these they just want to go out there and buy it. As we all know that most children can afford some certain products and they always got them from TV.
So the question is what about alcohol advertisements, should it be banned or not? Furthermore most of TV advertisements about the New Zealand World Cup are about alcohol, like beer but since most of the NZ rugby fans are families, children would be seeing these commercials. I wondered how this would affect how underage teenagers would be affected by these advertisements with humour, music, and some animal characters. These ads are basically telling them that it is okay to drink and have a good time and I also wondered what adolescents thought about while watching the ads.
Many families and friends have lost their loveable people because of alcohol consequences. Some people died from over drinking, or get in a car crash from being drunk while driving. Alcohol also results in health issues and fatal because of the drinking habits of the society. As we all know that the youth is our tomorrow’s future and most parents would not want their children to have that bad habit. However alcohol advertisements encourage them to drink and they would easily inspire from the ads. I also think that alcohol and alcohol beverages are slow poisons which effects in long term.
As we all know scientist clearly stated that on health issues children and young people under 18 should not be drinking. So we don’t want this to happen in the next generation which is the future of our families, churches, society and also our country (George, 2011). I have found that teenagers would be affected by alcohol commercials and I have also found that most advertisement reach for the viewers of teenagers more than adults because they are easier to manipulate. These factors may be psychological, environmental, social, or cultural. I really agree on the topic that Alcohol advertisements should be banned from TV.
Alcohol advertisement is a deadly mistake that will lead to a life of addiction, failure, pain and despair not only for adults’ but especially for young teenagers. References George, G.
