An epic hero is a brave and strong character who is admired for their great achievements. Beowulf clearly fits this category because he did such actions as risk his life and kill monsters. He does this many times throughout the poem. Beowulf boasts many times and in the end proves to be what he says he is.
A young Beowulf does anything to be a epic hero, one example is when he travels to a foreign land and slays a monster and its mother. This monster had no effect on Beowulf but since he has a deep desire to be known worldwide he decided to go out and kill the monsters. When he boasts about killing the sea monsters he says “A monster seized me, drew me swiftly toward the bottom, swimming with its claws tight in my flesh. But fate let me find its heart with my sword, hack myself free; I fought that beasts last battle, left it floating lifeless in the sea.” I’m not sure about you but if you ask me that is a epic action.
The old Beowulf was king of his land and pretty much did everything he could have to be known worldwide but he always wanted more. In his last adventure he goes out to kill a large dragon that has plenty gold. His shows his courageous and heroic attributes by saying “This is not your, nor is it up to any man except me to measure his strength against the monster or to prove his worth. I shall win the gold by my courage, or else mortal combat, doom of battle, will bear your lord away.” His internal drive of wanting to be the best helped him defeat the dragon. Sadly he was wounded and died after the battle. He asked that his people make him a tower with all the treasure in with him so all they people on passing boats will know whose tower it is.
In conclusion, these actions done by Beowulf makes him the legend he is today. There was no argument that Beowulf was an epic hero. Anyone who kills monsters for a living and shows dedication in wanting to be the best should be honored by society. That is why we still learn about his great actions today.
