Axia College Material Appendix D Contingency Theory of Leadership Description of work environment| Describe the work environment you intend to review for this assignment. The work environment I choose would be a retail store. The duties of the employees include customer service, stocking, receiving, selling, and proper inventory controls. | In the table below, categorize different leadership approaches that could be used in the work environment you have described. Provide different suggestions for each of the four approaches to leadership.
Directive approach| Supportive approach| In the direct approach I would give a handbook and explain what exactly the employee would be expected to do. I would explain their job responsibilities to them. I would work with them on their first couple of days to show them how to perform their exact job duties. | In the supportive approach I would spend some time introducing my self and explain to the new employee how I got into this business. I would ask them some questions and get to know them and show that I am interested in them as a person.
I would have them job shadow me and watch how I perform the duties they will be responsible for. I would then slowly allow them to begin performing their duties and allow them time to ask questions and get comfortable in their position before scheduling them on their own. | Participative approach| Achievement-oriented approach| In the participative approach I would spend some time explaining the polices and procedures of the business with them and tell them I am open to suggestions from them to improve our processes.
I would show them how to perform their job duties but ask that if they have seen any ways to improve the business to share them and we may adopt them. I would ask them to come up with processes that they feel work the best for them to perform their job functions. | Using the achievement approach I would tell them I expect a high level of achievement for the store and from them. I would explain that the success of the store would depend on them. I would explain that the amount of bonus, hours, wages, and benefits they receive will be offered on an individual level based upon individual achievement. |
Leadership recommendation| What is your recommendation for the BEST leadership approach for the work environment you described? Explain your recommendation. I think the best leadership style would be achievement oriented because people need to be motivated to perform well. People ask themselves what’s in it for me. If they know higher wages, bonus, increased hours, and more benefits would be paid for working at a high level they will put more effort out. If they understood that they may be promoted to a higher position they would work harder and compete with other associates to earn the promotion. |
