By the time they are seniors in high school, almost 70 percent of the students will have tried alcohol, half of them will have taken an illegal drug, nearly 40 percent will have smoked cigarette, and more than 20 percent will have used a prescription drug for a nonmedical purpose. There are many reasons adolescents use these substances, including the desire for new experiences, an attempt to deal with problems or perform better in school, and peer pressure.
