Walker Percy s essay, The Loss of the Creature describes the experiences that each individual goes through as either a echt experience driven by ain desires, or one that is already preconceived by experts. Percy believes that people can merely larn from experiences that are driven by pure personal desire, and non experiences already preconceived by experts. Percy describes the loss of sovereignty as preconceived impressions of an experience with the aid of experts. W.E.B Du Bois, on the other manus, wrote an essay called, The Souls of Black Folk that contradicts Percy s term of the loss of sovereignty. Du Bois strongly believes that with the aid of experts, people can so larn what they need to acquire in front in life.

Percy presents a type of tourer, which is the simple tourer. The simple tourer helps Percy to depict person who succumbs to the loss of sovereignty. In Percy s position, person who is a simple tourer goes along with what the expert s remark on. They stay on the beaten path. When he describes the beaten path he means the route that everyone follows put forth by experts. Peoples follow the beaten path cognizing what lies in front of them, and believing that it is the best manner to travel. Experts take away the sovereignty of world because they take off any surprise or challenge of a learning experience. Du Bois views the beaten path though, as the best manner to larn. The educational system that he strongly recommends is a way that he said a individual must take in order to win in life. That way describes Percy s position of the beaten path because it is a journey that Du Bois suggests that all immature people should take. This decidedly leaves out any room for them to roll off into their ain involvements if they should conform.

The pupils of Du Bois s essay characterize one of which fits as a simple tourer. Du Bois said,

Nothing new, no clip salvaging devices, -simply old clip glorified methods of diging the Truth, and seeking the concealed beauties of life, and larning the good of life. The conundrum of being is the college course of study that was laid before the Pharaohs, that was taught in the Grovess by Plato, that formed the trivium and quadrivium, and is to-day laid before the freewomans s boies by Atlanta University. And this class will non alter & # 8230 ; ( Du Bois, 235 ) .

Because they are expected to follow what expert say, their way is already predestined for them. The pupils suffer from a loss of sovereignty because the experts want the pupils to larn through the educational bundle that contains the preconceived impressions of the expertness. Du Bois said that nil will alter in the educational system, therefore, the pupils ne’er get a opportunity to research other than what experts expect and give them to larn. Percy would depict Du Bois pupils as simple pupils who are allowing adept sentiments control what they do, and how they perceive information. The adept s counsel aid to organize [ the ideas ] in the excursionist s head ( Percy, 566 ) , therefore, it takes off from the echt experience. Percy would depict Du Bois pupils as simple pupils who are allowing adept sentiments control what they do, and how they perceive information.

Percy would differ with Du Bois that old clip glorified methods of diging the Truth, and seeking the concealed beauties of life, and larning the good of life is through being a simple pupil. One can non be forced into wishing something if they are genuinely non interested in it, but Du Bois argued that instruction is something that is

necessary without taking into consideration the pupils desire to larn. Percy though, argued with an illustration that, A pupil who has the desire to acquire at a bowfin or a Shakespeare sonnet may hold the greatest trouble in salving the animal itself from the educational bundle in which it is presented ( 573 ) . Percy suggests that the educational bundle gets in the manner for a pupil to research because within the educational system, there are ever regulations which can restrict and deny the pupil their echt experience of researching on their ain. Percy sees that, …the citizen of Huxleys s Brave New World who stumbles across a volume of Shakespeare in some vine-grown ruins and knee bends on a potsherd to read it is in a just manner of acquiring at a sonnet than the Harvard sophomore taking English Poetry II ( Percy, 572 ) . The pupil s action was all motivated by personal desire, and therefore, received the most from the experience. There was non any expert to state the pupil that that was the right thing to make.

Though Percy would specify Du Bois s pupils as simple, Du Bois would hold no uncertainty in depicting his pupils as complex. Du Bois believes instruction is the footing for everything in life, and it is indispensable to survival in the universe. Du Bois would see that if a Negro gets out of the difficult life, he/she would be go forthing the beaten path that exist in their civilization and history of the Negro life. Du Bois would hold the experiences on the beaten path as something out of the ordinary because the ordinary Negro life does non include instruction. The black pupils are expected to work hard occupations to back up their household, which leaves no clip to travel to school. Working for money to back up the household is the beaten path for the people in Du Bois s essay. Du Bois predicts that if a pupil pursues in an instruction earnestly, they would be able to travel in front in life and acquire off the beaten path predestined for them by society.

Du Bois stated that, The map of the Negro college [ is to supply ] & # 8230 ; the rich and acrimonious deepness of their experience, the unknown hoarded wealths of their interior life, the unusual rendings of nature they have seen, may give the universe new points of position and do their loving, life and making cherished to all human Black Marias ( 248 ) . Du Bois infers that the educational system leads the individual off the beaten path by spread outing their positions through the eyes of experts. This characterizes the complex tourers, which Du Bois would categorise pupils into. Percy though, believes otherwise.

It is hard to clearly distinguish who is incorrect and who is right in the two essays. Both Percy and Du Bois base by their statements strongly, but through personal experiences, when instruction is forced upon the pupils such as myself, it is difficult to absorb all the information being taught, hence, my involvement in larning is lost. Percy sees that as a simple tourers characteristic. Like my parents, Du Bois suggests that instruction provide a successful hereafter. The black pupils who have non had the opportunity to see college should see instruction as acquiring off the beaten path, but bondage, and difficult labour which is their day-to-day life is the beaten path that most follow. To Percy, I am simple because some of my experiences are influenced by experts, but to my parents I would non be considered simple because I am making something that is non common in their lives. Traveling to college is out of the ordinary, merely like the Negroes. There are so many state of affairss that need to be taken into consideration before categorising people into simple and complex.
