During the late 18th century emerged the Industrial Revolution, applying both positive and negative effects as a direct outcome of industrialization in Britain and the U.S. It took quite some time for the revolution to spread to Western nations.

The Industrial Revolution impacted people based on their role in society and position in the labor force. The industrialization also increased it’s urbanization and population. The economic and industrial developments brought notable social changes. Some people prospered and became wealthy from the industrialization, however others did not benefit and lived in terrible conditions. Those who accumulated much of the wealth were the merchants, ship owners, and successful industrialists who dominated, but the working classes lived in overcrowded situations and little comfort. Women experienced a huge change in their lifestyles leaving the agricultural workforce and taking jobs in the domestic and textile industries. Children, as young as seven, were forced to work in dangerous factories being exploited and poorly treated. They worked long hours and often abused. This era also created a middle class in which many enjoyed the new benefits of prosperity.

There were many positive effects that came from the industrialization but only mostly impacted the higher class and factory owners. A part of the population saw a better living environment and a more expendable income. Due to factories desperate for more workers, the working class were able to find more jobs than in previous years. Mass production signified more affordable products available, benefitting numerous people of the lower and middle class. The increase in cities is one of the most enduring effects of the industrialization, due to many improvements and inventions in the agricultural methods. Most people who worked the lands on manors decided moving to the cities would be more advantageous. A great invention in the textile industry was the flying shuttle meant to speed up the weaving process which led to a chain of advanced inventions increasing the efficiency and speed of quantity and production. The economy continued to prosper and decreased prices in products, was a large impact.

The foremost negative impacts of the Industrial Revolution were the living and working conditions of the workers. Due to their lower social status, laborers were forced to work in unacceptable conditions. The usual workday was 12 to 16 hours with very little pay, for both children and adults. Machines in factories were very dangerous and workers were easily injured. Lack of workers compensation and job security was one negative impact. Inhabitants were exposed to diseases due to lack of sanitation such as plumbing which made streets filthy. Living environments crammed families in small living spaces that were unsanitary and filled with pollution. Unsafe environments in working and living conditions were the cause to many deaths.

The Industrial Revolution had a great effect on people both negative and positive. The positive greatly outweigh the negative, giving more jobs to people who were in need and making it possible to obtain affordable materials that they were in need of. The Industrial Revolution impacted the world for the better.
