The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is significant for Christianity for many reasons. Christ’s death is evidence of God and His powers, it represents the idea that Christians can have forgiveness for their sins, guarantees eternal life, and proves his divinity. For these reasons, without the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Christianity would not exist as these significant events make up the foundation of the Christian system. Firstly, the resurrection of Jesus is evidence of God and His powers. Christians believe in the resurrection which means they believe in God.
They believe that if God exists, and if He created the universe and has power over it, He has power to raise the dead. Christianity centres around faith and worship of God and the resurrection of Jesus Christ proved God’s immense power and hence strengthened his worthiness of worship. The historical death and resurrection of Jesus proved that only He who created life can resurrect it after death, only He can reverse the hideousness that is death itself, and only He can remove the sting that is death and the victory that is the grave’s. (1 Corinthians 15:54-55). Furthermore, the resurrection of Jesus Christ is evidence of the Trinity.
The Trinity expresses the belief that God is one being made up of three distinct Persons who exist in co-equal spirit and co-eternal communion as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The doctrine or concept of the Trinity is central to most Christian denominations and faith groups. In resurrecting Jesus from the grave, God reminds all Christians of His absolute sovereignty over life and death. Secondly, Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection represents to Christianity that Christians can have forgiveness for their sins. Paul stated: “If Christ hath not been raised, our faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins” (1 Corinthians 15:17).
Jesus died in the place of sinners in order to bring them closer to God. Therefore, it can be said that Jesus died for the sinners’ salvation and this is a significant factor acknowledged in Christianity. Furthermore, Christians believe that because Jesus Christ died for their salvation, anybody who believes in Christ is counted as one who has never sinned and lived a good life, in the eyes of God. This justification is exemplified in Romans 3:25-26 which states: “God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement… He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished…so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. ” Ultimately, Jesus was the Jesus was the price paid to the devil in order to liberate human beings from all sin. Jesus Christ’s resurrection guarantees the resurrection of those who follow Christianity. Christians believe that the resurrection to eternal life comes from the resurrected Jesus Christ. This is significant to Christianity as Christ’s resurrection allowed its followers to have eternal life. This gives Christians faith to continue believing in Jesus’ values so that one day they can be resurrected too.
Evidence in the bible supports this, whereby Jesus is referred to as the “firstfruits of them that are asleep” (1 Corinthians 15:20-23). This reference emphasises to those involved in Christianity that Christ’s death and resurrection is in fact a pledge to them their physical death is not a termination of their existence as they too shall be resurrected. John 3:16 confirms this: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. ” Lastly, Jesus’ resurrection proved his divinity the kingdom of God is ruled by a living sovereign.
One theory of Christianity is the resurrection of human beings and Jesus’ death and resurrection proved this theory to be true because unlike all other religions, Christianity alone possesses a founder who transcended death and who promises that His followers will do the same. It is significant for Christians to know that Jesus has surpassed death as they find it comforting to know that their God became man and the grave could not hold him. These points are supported in the Bible, particularly in Revelation where Jesus appears to John on the island of Patmos, sixty years after his death.
“I am the first and the last, and the Living one; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive for evermore” (Revelation 1:17-18). For this reason, Christians have evidence that Jesus Christ is divine. Jesus Christ died, was buried, and rose the third day according to the Scripture. And, He is coming again. Through these incredible events (Jesus’ death and resurrection), there is evidence of God and His powers, the idea that Christians can have forgiveness for their sins, a guarantee of eternal life, and proof of Jesus’ divinity. Therefore, it is clear that the death and resurrection of Jesus is significant for Christianity.
