In recent years, because of the depletion of certain energy powers such as oil and coal, the cost of them are substantially on the rise. Also, when their negative effects are considered such as causing global warming, green energy constitutes an alternative way to sustain energy. There are a number of countries all over the world which are not aware of this alternative way, including Turkey where green energy should be promoted domestically.
It should be promoted because it has a great number of advantages such as being renewable, easy sustainable, environmentally friendly and economical. First, one of the most remarkable features of using green energy is its renewable structure. Green energy is formed by natural sources such as rain, wind or sunlight which are constantly renewed. In other words, wind keeps blowing or sun keeps shining. However, energy sources out of green energy such as oil and coal are limited and are depleting fast because of excessive use.
According to the Institute of Science in Society, especially in the developed countries, because of the excessive use of fossil fuels such as oil and gas, the world’s reserves are rapidly decreasing, and this situation constitutes an energy problem. Therefore, green energy appears as the best solution to the energy problem thanks to being renewable. Second, being easily accessible is another feature of green energy, and Turkey is a rich country from the point of its potential of green energy sources such as geothermal, solar and wind. According to Lally M. Turkey has the eight percent of the geothermal energy potential which does not exist in other countries. Therefore, in different parts of Turkey, different kinds of green energy sources can be used. Alacat? or Canakkale are the example of windy places in Turkey where wind can be used as energy source. In the places which lack of wind, it is possible to use another sources such solar energy source. However, coal or oil sources are found only in some parts of Turkey. That is, coal or oil resources are typical to a place whereas green energy sources can be easily sustainable.
Therefore, especially in Turkey, the accessibility of it is quite high. Third, green energy is energy that is generated in a manner that has fewer adverse effects to the environment than other current energy sources like fossil fuels or coal mining, which often produce harmful side effects in the stage of combustion. According to US department of Energy on greenhouse gases, ‘’burning of fossil fuels produces around 21. 3 billion tones of carbon dioxide each year’’, but it is estimated that natural processes can only absorb about half of that amount, so there is a net increase of 10. 5 billion tones of atmospheric carbon dioxide per year and unfortunately this great increase contributes to global warming in long terms. Also, while burning, coal releases methane gas to the atmosphere which induces climate change in long term by penetrating ozone layers and triggering global warming. However, green energy aims to reduce the drawbacks of energy sources while providing required energy by utilizing nature. In other words, it uses natural sources such as wind, sun or water that almost never release hazardous substances like ozone to the atmosphere.
Last, there are also other people who think in the opposite way by considering green energy’s some negative effects. They argue that green energy is an expensive way to produce energy; especially in Turkey it is really hard to find extra income to found required facilities. They claim that there must be a strong income to provide an area for green energy facilities, and to found them also needs an extra income. However, they only focus on initial expenses of construction processes by skipping the rest of it.
The World Wide Energy Association emphasized in the tenth world wind energy conference that ‘’ The wind sector in 2010 had a turnover of 40 billion Euro and employed 670. 000 persons worldwide’’. Therefore, once green energy facilities are founded, the foremost benefit of them will be being very economical. Also, the increasing consumption of other energy powers such as coal or fossil fuels will lead to these powers’ sources gradually decreasing and being overpriced. Therefore, if it is founded as soon as possible, green energy will become much more economical in the future.
To sum up, Green energy in Turkey should be promoted because it is renewable so it never run out of, it can be easily accessible, it provides a better environment by helping to stop the global warming and it is much more economical than other energy powers. To provide green energy and to use its various beneficial effects, the crucial mission falls on the government. The government should take important steps by allocating its funds for required facilities, raising awareness of the public about green energy and measuring its possible sources for green energy.
