Sometimes we know who and what we are. but it’s impossible to have on an individuality without going what we pretend to be or bullied into silence leting ourselves to be made a victim to subjugation. In this essay I’m comparing the writers of “How it Feel to Be Colored Me by Zora Hurston. and How to Tame a Wild Tongue by Gloria Anzaldua. Gloria Anzaldua became a victim of subjugation by accepting society outlooks of the Chicano civilization. Meanwhile. Zora Hurston accepted who she is despite who people perceived her as because of her tegument colour.
These two writers defends their personal individualities through their civilizations in separate ways. In the narrative How to Tame a Wild Tongue. Gloria Anzaldua feels that the manner person is can non be controlled it can merely be erased ; she states “Wild linguas can’t be tamed. they can merely be cut out” ( Page 31 ) . Anzaldua was against losing her speech pattern and had an issue with seting her first linguistic communication as a 2nd. She would arise as a kid when told non to talk Spanish. so she struggled with altering and accommodating to the American civilization. She believed her civilization the “Chicano” civilization needed to differ from others with a secret linguistic communication they can be able to pass on amongst each other. “Chicano Spanish demand to place ourselves as a distinguishable people. We needed a linguistic communication which we could pass on with ourselves. a secret language” ( Page 32 ) . By making their ain slang allows them to link their individuality and communicate world. values. and things they have in common. Yet. Zora Hurston in the narrative “How it feels to be Colored Me” expresses the manner she was created doesn’t bother her nor makes her sadden. “I am non tragically colored. There is no great sorrow dammed up in my psyche. nor skulking behind my eyes. I don’t head at all ( Page 145 ) . ” Unlike other coloured people she doesn’t hatred herself for the colour of her tegument. she’s proud to be created as the individual she is without sorrow. Although. she’s invariably reminded of her civilization background it fails to convey her unity down. because ascendants paid the monetary value of her free start in society. and shouldn’t halt to reflect on picks that wasn’t hers. “Someone is ever at my cubitus reminding me that I am the grand-daughter of slaves. It fails to register depression with me. I am away to a winging start and must I non halt to look back and weep. Slavery is the monetary value I paid for
civilisation. and the pick was non with me” ( Pages 145-146 ) . Zora Hurston doesn’t see herself a portion of her civilization who uses their skin colour for a bad alibi for why they’re in negative life state of affairss. “I do non belong to the sobbing school of Negrohood who holds that nature somehow has given them a lowdown dirty trade and whose feelings are hurt about it ( Page 145 ) .
