In the art world artist have had many inspirations for artworks such as: love, tragedy, history, and even everyday life. The two artworks that will be compared uses one of the biggest inspirations for their period; religious beliefs. The coupled artworks that will be analyzed include Danatello’s, The Borromeo Madonna, century 1450, and Anonymous Japanese artist, Seated Nyoirin Kannon, century 1230-1250. The two sculptures that are presented have religious iconography as the base of their subjects, and provide the on-looker with a sense of the artist religious beliefs. Each of the pieces show excellent use of materials, composition, and depiction of the time periods common religious ideas.
The Borromeo Madonna is a terracotta sculpture featuring the “Virgin and Child”. The figures are specifically Virgin Mary and baby Christ. Religious inspiration comes from the catholic religion, which was very promamate in the around the 14th and 15th century. At first glance the audience can easily make out the figures of Mary and Christ, with this in mind one can see the idealized depiction that Donatello presents to his spectators. The faces of the two are crafted in a way where no harsh curves are seen anywhere on them, along with the neck of Mary and the stature of christ. Christ has a elongated torso and legs, this helps gives him a presence in the work, and balance him out with Mary in the asymmetrical composition. The hands that Mary is created with in this work are out of portion with the rest of her body, this was to give a sturdy and supported relationship between Mary and here child.
As for the Seated Nyoirin Kannon was created in the “Land of the Rising Sun,” know as Japan. The major influence for the artwork is the Indian Buddhist deity Avalokite Shurara, within the religion he is known as the god of compassion, one who granted desires, and turns the wheel of law. This depiction is the Japanese buddhist version, made with wood with gilt pigment add in. Avalokite Shurara can be depicted in multiple ways two examples being: one with two arms, and the other being one with six. The artist for this piece chose to go with the six armed version. The figure that represents the deity has no definition of muscle,and no defining facial characteristics. Yet one can see the resemblance to must buddhist statues including the headpiece, elongated ears, and sublime look on his face. The sculpture is extremely smooth in texture, and gives a relaxing pose to ease one’s mind. The sculpture is almost considered symmetrical except for the different positions of the arms, yet still give the sense of balance to the on-looker. Each of the arms and hands poses gives a separate meaning and representation for the buddhist religion. The artwork also gives off a sense of power and knowledge, but still keeping that serine feel to it.
