Tobias Wolff is renowned author and is well known for short stories and memoirs. Tobias Wolff’s work is admired by everyone who read his short stories and memoirs. Bullet in the Brain is the short story written by the great personality Tobias Wolff. The story revolves around the main character Anders who is in the bank waiting for his turn and witness the robbery and is killed and shot by the person who is engaged in robbery. The story provides the message that people shouldn’t be judged instantly without understanding the situation. Moreover, one has no right to say negative about others if they have done nothing wrong. In addition to it, the story also tells that with the passage of time innocence of childhood disappeared and harshness started developing in an individual’s life as seen through the main character Andres.
At the starting of the story, when one of the bank tellers declared of position closing, Andres lose his temper and he said one of the lady who is standing in front of him that “Unforgivable” and he also said that “Heaven will take note”. Andres didn’t bother what he was speaking. Without knowing the reason why, the teller had sign in the position closing. He judged that teller very quickly without knowing the proper reason. Andres behavior towards this situation was very arrogant, cynical and ironical. Andres mocked without understanding the situation. The way of acting of the Andres towards different situation was not right. Moreover, his way of speaking was not fair. He had no right that he should say something wrong to others and disrespect them without judging the circumstances. He quickly judged people which made him and his life angry towards people. He could make his life better and happier if he can judge the people according to circumstances. So, one should judge the people gently.
Furthermore, when two men who came in the bank for the purpose of robbery, Andres kept on speaking continuously in that critical situation without judging the circumstances. He did not know what words he had to speak in the situation of when he was in the bank. Instead of behaving in mature way, he was behaving as a child. Andres kept on mocking in front of robbers and considered himself as smart and said that “The stern, brass-knuckled poetry of the dangerous classes” (Wolff 1). Robbers even told all the people present in the bank to be quiet, but Andres did not bother about their words and he did not know that the words he was speaking can be the cause of his death. Even when again the robbers said him again that “Hey! Bright boy! Did I tell you talk?” (Wolff 2). Andres answered that “NO” and robbers told him to keep his mouth shut. In addition to it, Andres again mocked by saying that “‘Bright boy.’ Right out of ‘The Killers’.” Then one of the women said him to be quiet but even he kept on nuisance stuffs. He behaved like a baby in that situation and he was not acting as sensible as well as responsible.
In addition to it, Andres kept on speaking thinking himself superior and elegant. He was unaware that this unusual uttering of words can lead him to great risk. Many times, the robbers point out the pistol towards Andres so that he could shut his mouth up but that crazy person without caring about anything kept on speaking. By uttering constantly this man, Andres raise the anger and temper of the robbers. At one point of the story, Andres started laughing a lot with great noise, that time one of the man having pistol raised the pistol towards the Andres and shot straight in his head. He lost his life due to his own mistake that he was not able to judge the situation properly and goes on speaking constantly in the circumstances where he was not supposed to utter. So, one should always be careful about the words he or she is going to speak in different environment and judge people in the fair way according to the condition and situation.
When Andres was shot out right in the head and he was going to die, he remembers only his memory of childhood and didn’t remembered any other important memories of life. Even he did not recall the memories or experiences he had with his wife or his first lover or his daughter. He remembered only himself as a child waiting for his friends in the baseball field for the game he used to play with his friends. He remembered about yellow grass, insects he saw when he was waiting for his friend to pickup him for game they had to play. As childhood is the age of innocence and positivity. Andres didn’t remember any negativity of his life.
Besides this, throughout the story “Bullet in the Brain”, Andres’s awkward behaviour can be seen. He was a man of bad temper and had harshness in his behaviour. As the time passed on Andres behaviour get transformed from innocence to harshness. When he was at the sake of dying he only remembered the most precious part of his life that is childhood. As time is the enemy of childhood and innocence. Time vanished all the politeness and purity of childhood that Andres had in his childhood time and endured the unpleasant or angrily behaviour in the adult part of his life.
