The researcher used quantitative type f and ready-made questionnaire were provided by the researchers for the female respondents. Survey-questionnaire was utilized in this study. Purposive sampling was used in selecting the participants for this study. It was found out that the physiologic needs of the participants must be met first before the higher level of needs is satisfied. The result is congruent with the theory of Moscow that the in the hierarchy of needs, the most basic are met first and then the safety needs are before the need for self- esteem, love and belongingness and self- actualization is met by an individual respectively.

The researcher found out that there is no significant difference in motivation of the participants in terms of sex in Joining beauty pageant competitions The physiologic needs assessed in this study includes having an excuse to have a balance diet, money to buy their family’s basic needs, maintain a healthy lifestyle, to be free from poverty and to have enough rest. Among the five level of hierarchy of needs, self- actualization needs got the lowest motivation which has the mean of 1. 56. The researcher also found out that there is no significant difference in motivation in Joining beauty pageants according to the ender of the participants.

And also there is no significant relationship between age and the motivation in Joining beauty pageants. Motivations of Beauty Pageant Contestants Beauty… What does it really mean? “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder,” some will say as there are lots of definitions for it. You may be beautiful based on your own opinion but do other people have the same idea? Our country participates in several beauty pageants and is sometimes fortuned to take home the crown. The concept of beauty in such pageants includes physical appearance, poise, talent, and more importantly intelligence.

You may also take for considerations the dress the candidates wear like gowns, casuals, swimsuits and many more which give another glow to the beauty of the woman. The name “Beauty Queen” which is intact with the winner of the pageant serves as a big recognition for someone. It sometimes became a highlight or important event to her hometown. Some says Joining in a beauty pageant is part of the growing process of a woman, so they enter and try their luck in some. Some keep their family tradition and stand for the name they once left in a beauty contest.

And there are also who are Just pinpointed or are Joining Just for fun. According to Measles Theory of Human Motivation, human actions are directed towards goal attainment. That every activity human performs were urged by the need for satisfaction. The theory demonstrates the hierarchy of needs in a form of a pyramid with Physiological Needs (like food, air, water, sex, shelter, sleep, etc. ) at the lowest, Safety Needs (includes environment, health, etc. ) a step higher, next is Belongingness (love, friendship, family, etc. ), and then there is Esteem (like self-confidence, achievement, respect, love, etc. , and finally Self-actualization (creativity, morality, etc. ) at the highest. Disrespects according to him motivates human to perform certain activities. There are some articles written about beauty pageant contestant’s motivations like Sarah-Bane Wiser (1999) who states that the “new experience” of the pageant was their motivation for entering such completion. Another is Rebecca Chicago King – Oaring (2006) sharing her story in their country where beauty pageant participation is an extension of community service, cultural preservation or cultural learning.

And lastly there is also Phillip Scranton (2001) saying that “sisterhood” is one of the motivations of contestants as it s lined with women’s achievement in public realm, and sexual liberation. But what are the real reasons behind the participation of these candidates? How are they motivated? Do the people around them affect their decision? What are their personalities that qualify them to Join beauty contests? And also what is their concept of beauty?

This study will help us to understand the motivations of CLAUS students who have Joined beauty contests and the similarities and differences in their personalities at the same time relating the results to related literatures including Measles theory of Human Motivation. Methodology Research Design The researcher used quantitative type of research to determine and describe the motivations of female and male beauty pageant contestants. This study used mean to know the level of motivations. Data Gathering Procedure A ready-made questionnaire was provided by the researchers for the female and male respondents.

The questionnaire was then be distributed to the respondents and collected by the researchers right after they have finished answering. All questions and clarifications were entertained by the researcher and further clarifications and questions from the respondents were encouraged. Instrumentation Survey-questionnaire was utilized in this study. This helped the respondents to answer the given questions easily. The questions listed in the questionnaire were carefully developed to achieve the stated objectives and for the benefit of further learning.

The questionnaire is composed of two parts; the socio-demographic profile of the respondents and the other one are the five levels of motivations of beauty contest contestants. Participants Purposive sampling was used in selecting the participants for this study. As long as the respondents are males and females and were able to Joined beauty pageants thin the vicinity of the university, they were qualified to answer the questionnaire. This study required 15 male and 15 female participants of any age who have Joined previous or present beauty contests inside the university.

The contest can be university wide, college wide, or sponsored by an organization as long as it is an acknowledge activity inside the university. The participants were Boniface students of CLAUS regardless of their course and college. Plan for Data Analysis The data gathered from the respondents was analyzed and related to Measles theory of Human Motivation to determine what really motivates the participants in ongoing beauty pageants. Descriptive analysis was also applied used on this study to provide summary about the computed data.

The data was analyzed using Statistical Program for Social Sciences (SPAS). The survey questionnaire used answers using the Strongly Agree, Agree, Strongly Disagree, and Disagree. The results were presented using frequency, percentage and means. Results and Discussion The results and the interpretations are presented in this chapter. Figure 1 shows the general mean of the different needs based on the hierarchy of Abraham Moscow. The answers of the respondents with the motivation for Joining beauty pageants are explained and interpreted in this part.

The first part shows the difference in level of motivation of the respondents according to sex and the Correlation between the motivation of the respondents according to age to Join beauty pageant competitions. Motivations of students to Join Beauty Pageant Contest Majority of the students’ motivation to Joined beauty pageant contest is to have enough rest with a mean of 3. 33 which is very high on physiological needs; to have a stable Job with 3. 23 which is high on safety needs; to be accepted by friends with 2. 27 which is low on love and belongingness needs; would not be laughed by others with 3. Which is high on esteem needs and to donate money for unprivileged people institution with 2. 27 which is very low on self-actualization needs. It presents that the motivation of the contestants who Joined beauty pageant contest are motivated on the hierarchy of needs but some needs are not that much motivated maybe because of some other reasons. But still they are motivated in some needs specifically the physiological needs followed by safety needs to Join beauty pageant contest which supports Measles assumption that people is motivated based on their needs.

People are motivated by their needs because needs like rest, balance diet, DOD, safety, relationships and others are universal to us. Socio-demographic profile of the respondents Table 1 shows the socio-demographic profile of the respondents. Majority of the respondents Joined Most Beautiful Face or MBA followed by Mr.. & Ms. Mantras. There are 15 male and 15 female respondents and most of their age is ranging from 18-19 years old. Figure 1. Figure 1 presents the mean of every stage as the different motivations of beauty pageant contestants to Join such competitions.

It was found out that the physiologic needs of the participants must be met first before the higher level of needs is testified. The researcher found out that there is no significant difference in motivation of the participants in terms of sex in Joining beauty pageant competitions.

This is in accordance with Measles hierarchy of needs, that all people are motivated by the same basic needs and this is regardless of sex. The physiologic needs assessed in this study includes having an excuse to have a balance diet, money to buy their family’s basic needs, maintain a healthy lifestyle, to be free from poverty and to have enough rest. The second most important needs are related to the safety of respondents. This includes to be financially secured, to have personal property (house and lot, cars, etc. , to have a stable Job, to have enough savings account, and to have a good future. The third most important are the love and belongingness needs that includes the want to be accepted by friends, want for parents to be proud of the participant, want to be accepted/admired by people around, want to make boyfriend proud and the want to meet new people and friends. To be able to satisfy or fulfill the highest needs such as esteem needs and self actualization needs, lowers needs must be satisfied or fulfilled first. This is According to the assumption of Moscow (1970) and if people can fulfill the lower needs early, they have more time to fulfill the shiest needs.

However, this study found out that there is no significant relationship between age and the motivation of the respondents of the beauty pageants to Join in these competitions. This is because the age brackets of the respondents were too close Summary and Conclusion In every stage, there is a motivation that scores the highest mean indicating that it has the most influence for the participants. The different stages of Measles hierarchy of needs were used in this research.
