Mouth is considered as the mirror of the general health of human body. Oral cavity harbors billions of microorganisms, some of these contributed to the development of progression of systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, etc.13 Oral health and general health is interrelated 6. So it is very important to maintain oral health. Antibiotic resistance, adverse effect and toxicity to modern medicines has prompted scientist to research on natural product.3 Most commonly oral disease such as gingivitis is due to poor maintenance of oral hygiene.
As dental professionals, we are alert that the removal and prevention of supragingival bacterial plaque by good oral hygiene is necessary to achieve and maintain good oral health.14 In addition, a certain kind of dentrifice is suggested to achieve the specific need of the patient, such as for sensitive teeth.21 The pursuit for whiter teeth in not a new fashion. Tooth discolouration was documented in the literature as a dental problem more than 150 years ago, and the practice of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) solution to remove tooth stain can be traced back more than a century. Nowadays, tooth whitening is recognized as basic part of dentistry as well as a common practice in the general population.23
So many commercials have been showed to the people on the lifestyle of pleasure by using their product of bleaching agent. We are pulled by our social media to care and concentrate on our physical appearances, not on the chemical substances that they advertise that may have harmful effects on our health. Baking soda has been used worldwide in enhancing the teeth whitening. It may be used alone or it can be combined with other household products and plants. Baking soda or scientifically called sodium bicarbonate is a leavening agents used in baked goods like cookies or quick bread. Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide are the ingredients or materials which help whiten and polish teeth 1. There are a few advantages why the folk over the years ago use baking soda to whiten and polish their teeth. Commonly, baking soda helps to whiten the teeth and it is inexpensive. It also helps in controlling bad breath which may involve a lot of people with poor dental hygiene. The major advantages of brushing with baking soda are its teeth whitening and plaque reduction buildings, as well as its price relative to other commercially readily available teeth whiteners. Brushing with baking soda gets rid of plaque deposits from teeth; plaque deposits add to dental cavity. The biggest advantage of brushing with baking soda is the enhancements that it imparts onto overall dental health 2.
Most of the people frequently use baking soda with other household items such as coconut oil. Coconut oil play and advanced effect when it is used with baking soda. Coconut oil has been recognized for its beneficial effects regarding oral health. When combined with baking soda, it reacts two times more effective and gives a better results. Coconut oil teeth whitening is growing popular as one of the natural methods used to whiten yellow teeth. People have probably heard of oil pulling- a unique method that most people have used to whiten the teeth. While it may not sound as pleasant having to swirl oil in your mouth, its way better than teeth whitening bleaches which come with a number of side effects 3.
In ancient Indian technique, coconut oil is the most suggested oil ingredient for oil-pulling and whitening of the teeth. Several studies have been conducted to prove if the coconut oil has the benefits to whiten the teeth. Coconut oil does not whiten teeth by bleaching but rather with lauric acid which helps get rid of plaque and bacteria- major contributors to yellow teeth. Coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids with 50% being lauric acid. Lauric acid has proven anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties which help to get rid of plaque and bacterial on the teeth and gums. It also helps to keep your breath fresh. A study published in the Nigerian Journal of Medicine in April 2015, looked at 60 subjects between the ages 16 and 18 who used oil pulling as part of their oral hygiene over a period of 30 days. After 7 days of oil pulling, the levels of plaque and gum disease had significantly reduced 4.
Tooth discoloration may be an embarrassment for most of the people. Using these household bleaching agent helps us to save the cost as it is inexpensive and it can be found anywhere in the store. Most of the bleaching agents may give rise to some harmful effects on the oral cavity or general health. This can be avoided by making our own bleaching agent.
