Oriental studies stereotypes have influenced us in believing that it is true. In the film Mulan that we had watched in category. we had found rather a few stereotypes that were exaggerated in the film. The vocals they had played were tricky and memorable but they provided some illustrations of stereotypes in the movie. Besides another portion of the movie mentioned another stereotype where adult females in China were looked down upon by the work forces. Another major stereotype was when the film added a physical portraiture of the encroachers of China. the Huns.

The vocals in Mulan. while catchy and memorable. provided some extra illustrations of stereotypes in the movie. In one of the scenes. Mulan visits the matcher so that she can happen a hubby. which will convey award to her household. The thought of this scenes stereotype was that Mulan a immature Chinese adult female in the clip that they were in could merely convey award to her household by acquiring married. To make this. Mulan needed to alter her visual aspect. The limited function of the adult females is stressed in the vocal which is depicting how the misss can “bring honour to us all… . The adult male by bearing weaponries. a miss by bearing boies. ” This is stressed because the lone manner to convey award to the household is by happening a hubby. This describes traditional Chinese values as focused on engendering composure. obedient. soundless misss whose end is to get married a hubby and to bear kids for their hereafter. Another vocal that was besides overstating in a stereotype from Mulan was “A Girl worth Contending For. ” which was described what all of the soldiers are looking for in a adult female. Harmonizing to this vocal. the miss must be “paler than the Moon. ” she must besides “marvel at my strength. ” and “it all depends on what she cooks like. ” When Mulan had mentioned encephalons and talking her head. the work forces responded with a merely “Nah! ” In this stereotype of Chinese civilization. adult females were non wanted for their intelligence ; they were viewed and wanted as an attractive and submissive married woman to their hubby.

Another portion of the movie mentioned another stereotype where adult females in China were looked down upon by work forces. Mulan was repeatedly scolded by the work forces in her society. In one scene. when Mulan was “Ping. ” he had saved the lives of her fellow soldiers. Ping is called a hero and was gained the regard of the work forces. In the following scene. she is found out to be a adult female and the work forces instantly looked down on her. disgusted. and abandoned her scantily clad on the snowy land. In a different scene. Mulan attempts to support her male parent so that he does non hold to travel to war. the Emperor’s council catchs at her male parent ( non really talking to Mulan. a adult female ) . stating he should learn his girl to “hold her lingua in a man’s presence. ” And in the vocal when the work forces were developing. Li Shang asks. “Did they send me girls when I asked for boies? ” Near the terminal of the film. when Mulan defeated Shan Yu and saved China. the emperor’s council told Li Shang. “She’s a adult female ; she’ll ne’er be deserving anything. ” This has showed how adult females were looked down upon by the work forces of China.

Finally. a different manner of demoing a major stereotype was when the film added a physical portraiture of the encroachers of China. the Huns. The leader of the Huns. Shan Yu is the most horrifically depicted of all. His black superciliums that pointed downwards seemed to do a lasting immorality frown. his eyes are bantam xanthous circles. his dentitions point up at the corners like a lamia. and his deep voice reminds us the viewer’s merely how evil he is supposed to be. The Huns contrast the Chinese ground forces strongly ; while the Chinese have healthy-looking tegument. the Huns are in a grey colour. doing them look dead. The Chinese characters throughout the film normally tie their hair up neatly. but the Huns leave their hair untidy and down. demoing their barbarian nature even further. Besides. the ambiance of the scene alterations when the Huns are shown. The sky gets darker when the Huns appear and in some scenes the sky is really ruddy when the Huns are shown and exchange back to a bluish clear sky when demoing the Chinese cantonments and lands. The music besides changes from a cheerful music background to an baleful melody when the Huns arrive.

In decision. Orientalism stereotypes have influenced us in believing that it is true. The purpose of the film should non be to lift against every member of Chinese society in defiance of imposts and traditions. but to turn out that one can maintain their wants and independency while maintaining their ain civilization and individuality.
