Outcasts United

In the book and in today’s society, it is shown that ethics and philosophy play a major factor through our choices, the service we give to one another, and the discipline that we maintain. The boys on the refugee soccer team, in the book, are opened up to situations where they have to make the right choices or deal with the tough consequences. We can see throughout the text that Lama does not want the boys on the Fugues getting into any trouble. She makes sure of this by having the boys sign a contract stating that they would not get involved in any bad choices like drugs or alcohol and even demonstrate bad behavior.

Lama realizes that the boys on the Fugue team do not have stable families and she figures out that their parents are often working, most of the time, which creates little to none adult supervision at home. Lama takes it in to her own power to be the guidance and the drive in the boys lives. Even Lama had to make choices in the book. Even though there was lots of frustration towards the resettlement process, Lama decided to create this soccer team anyways. As stated in the book, “Lama decided that the kids ally needed a free soccer program of their own.

She didn’t have the foggiest idea of how to start or run such a program. She certainly couldn’t fund it, and with a restaurant to run and a team of her own to coach, she hardly had time to spare. But the more she played soccer in the parking lots around Classrooms and the more she learned about the kids there, the more she felt a nagging urge to engage, and to do something. ” (51) I must say from reading this book that I understood she wanted soccer to be the sport as it would create an environment for the boys to utilize more decision making.

An example from the book that states this is, “… Soccer unfolds fluidly and continuously. To understand how a goal was scored, you have to work back through the action – the sequences of passes and decisions, the movement of the players away from the action who reappear unexpectedly in empty space to create or waist opportunities. ” (8) This can be compared to society as we see people contribute to programs to help children and even adults get out of the stump they are in.

These choices, to start a program like Lama or even some of the programs we see in our communities, go to show that people doing what is morally right, and not to base things on their background, can go a long way. This leads to my next topic, which primarily covers the service that is provided to one another. In today’s society, we see that there are many things that we cannot accomplish alone. It takes the guidance and help of another person to give us that extra push. Lama monstrance this in Outcasts United as she tries to go without “the social and financial safety net her parents provided at home” (23).

Hosannas would be that upper hand as he would try to persuade her from making that decision to have no support. That goes to show that even the coach can deal with needing the help or the assistance to get things right in her life. Now discipline is a major factor when it comes to reaching the success you want morally and ethically. It is shown in the book that Lama wants the boys to learn that with discipline, comes success and it is demonstrated in chapter 1 as she says,
