Pacific railfair chugs into San Mateo, September 7 through 9.

It sounds like a model railroader’s fantasy: replicas of more than a dozen lines such as the Northern Pacific, Cotton Belt, and Rock Island; 50 railroaders showing N-, HO-, S-, and O-gauge trains; and an attempt at a world’s record: the longest N-gauge train, with a thousand cars.

Trains and railroaders are all part of Pacific Railfair, the model railroad show at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds, on Delaware Street and 25th Avenue. You can chat with model railroad club members, see displays from manufacturers and hobby shops, and barter at swap tables. It’s a good way to learn more about this hobby and see the breadth of equipment, much of which will be for sale or trade.

You’ll also see a display of circus trains, complete with HO-scale animals and big top. Admission is $2 for adults or $4 per family. Hours are 6 to 9 Friday, 11 to 9 Saturday, and 11 to 6 Sunday.

to get to the fairgrounds, take U.S. 101 to State 92 and go west 1/2 mile, then left on Delaware to the fairgrounds.
