Having readThe Story of an Hour? by Kate Chopin I was left with several questions. Mallard really happy in her marriage? Why did her reactions when her husband news was told to her, different than other people who react? What does she mean by free? Does her heart trouble, have a double meaning? Throughout the story it gives a possible answer, but nothing concrete. For, Mrs. Mallard’s situation is most likely not an unusual one in the century that Kate Chopin was alive.

In the story Mrs. Mallard hadthought with a shudder that life might be long?, does that phrase mean that she was doomed to live a long and unhappy marriage the rest of her life. It seems that she had grown accustomed to her husband and remains with him out of stationary comfort and tradition. She also speaks about her love towards her husband Brently Mallard. Howshe had loved him-sometimes. Often she had not? It was clear that her love for Breantly was not always there. For Mrs. Mallard’s had demonstrated that her devotion to Brently is not without limit. .

As her sister Josephine told Mrs.Mallardin broken sentences, veiled hints that revealed in half concealing.? that her husband’sname leading the list ofkilled.?? Mrs. Mallard was obviously expected to be devastated by this news, but strangely, she was not. Chopin tells us that “She did not hear the story as many women would have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance. She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister’s arms. When the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone. She would have no one follow her.” .

Was she free that she never had to see her husband again and that society would now accept her as a widow for her accustomed to her husband could now be broken that her stationary comfort towards him no longer had to be.
