Short Statement # 1 – Danger of a Single Story
Our lives, our cultures are composed of many overlapping stories. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice. She mentions in her speech “the single story creates stereotypes and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete, they make one story become the only story”. We are all guilty of carrying on stereotypes that creates a single story, whether it is intentional or not. When we hear the same story repeatedly, it becomes the only story we ever believe. Often we hear about this version of Africa being the poorest “country” in the world where rural landscapes exist and where people live in terror among wild animals. We must learn to unlearn these ongoing stereotypes in order to allow ourselves to see that there is more than just one narrative.
