Romeo and Juliet essay The story of Romeo and Juliet is the best tragedy ever to be written. The tale of two adolescents taking their lives because of their love for one another has inspired a lot of controversy as to whether the adults surrounding these adolescents could have done something to prevent this tragedy. The truth is the adults in the situation are ultimately to blame for the deaths of their love struck teens. This essay will explain why Friar Laurence, Nurse and to a lesser extent Mercutio, caused the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Friar Laurence is at fault for causing this catastrophe.
Friar Laurence is one of many who should have guided Romeo and Juliet’s love into a more stable situation. It was the Friar who married these two young adults after they had only known each other for one day. ”In one respect I’ll thy assistant” Almost every girl would jump at the chance to be in a relationship with Romeo and the Friar should have seen this and tried to convince Romeo to slow things down. The Friar then further complicated this already immensely passionate and yet fragile relationship by giving a death emulating potion to Juliet. Hold, daughter. I do spy a kind of hope, which craves as desperate as execution as that is desperate which we would prevent. If. Rather than marry county Paris, Thou hast the strength of will to slay thyself, Then is it likely thou will undertake a thing like death to chide away from this shame, that cop’st with death himself to ‘scape from it ; And, if thou darest, I’ll give thee remedy’. The Friar does attempt to explain the situation in a letter but Romeo never receives it.
It is Friar Laurence who is reprehensible for the death of Romeo and Juliet, due to his spontaneous actions he managed to obscure the situation which resulted in the ending of the two young lovers’ lives. Juliet’s Nurse is also to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s sudden death. The Nurse’s role was to nurture and help Juliet make mature and responsible decisions. Though this is not always what occurs. On multiple occasions the nurse becomes entangled by this fragile romance. The nurse also had a duty of care to be a stable and supportive guardian though the nurse isn’t xactly stable. When Juliet informs the nurse that she is to marry Romeo, instead of questioning the situation and wondering if all this was happening all too quickly the Nurse is full of glee for the young bride. ‘Good heart, and in faith I will tell her as much. Lord, Lord, she will be a joyful woman’. Later in this tragic tale the nurse tries to reverse some of the damage she may have caused and tries to convince Juliet to give up on Romeo. Upon hearing this Juliet becomes desperate and makes multiple bad decisions.
If the Nurse had truly thought through the consequences of her decisions, maybe these two lovers would have lived. Mercutio is what his name stands to be, Mercurial. Though known as a joyful and intense character, he is in fact partially to blame for the tragic death of the two young lovers. It is in fact Mercutio who convinces a young Romeo to forget about his then love, Rosaline, and come to a party at the Capulet mansion. Mercutio should have also realised that Romeo would never have been allowed into the Capulet mansion because of the feuding between families. Nay, gentle Romeo, we must have you dance’ ‘You are a lover. Borrow Cupid’s wings and soar with them above a common bound’. Romeo at first feels that he is too depressed after Rosaline renounced his love. Mercutio, also whilst trying to save Romeo becomes more of hindrance. When Romeo receives death threats from Tybalt, Mercutio becomes enraged and goes to fight Tybalt. In doing this Mercutio is killed by Tybalt. Upon hearing this Romeo is devastated and exasperated. In a fit of anger Romeo finds Tybalt and kills him.
This leads Romeo to be banished and a deadly chain of events to occur. This is why Mercutio is partially to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. In conclusion this young romance should not have ended in such tragedy. There were so many so called ‘responsible’ adults constantly surrounding these two young lovers that someone should have realised that this love was complex far beyond their teenage years. This romance was complex for these two adolescents to understand, and it was obviously far too perplexed for the surrounding company to believe.
