In the short narrative “ A & A ; P ” , John Updike explains how Sammy is a immature adult male working as a teller. One twenty-four hours three immature ladies come into the supermarket half dressed have oning merely their swimwears. Sammy is intrigued by these immature adult females, along with everyone else in the supermarket. Sammy watches their every move, as the misss made their choices. Sammy tries to play the hero at the terminal of the narrative ; nevertheless he may hold been his ain worst enemy.
Sammy describes the three misss in great item throughout the narrative. “ The 1 that caught my oculus foremost was the 1 in the tartan green lounge suit. She was a chunky child, with a good sunburn and a sweet wide soft-looking can with those two crescents of white Just under it, where the Sun ne’er seems to hit at the top of the dorsums of her legs ” ( 496 ) . Sammy refers to the following immature lady as, “ one with chubby berry-faces, the lips all bunched together under her olfactory organ, this one, and a tall one, with black hair that had n’t rather frizzed right, and one of these tans right across under the eyes, and a mentum that was excessively long-you know, the sort of miss other misss think is really ‘striking ‘ and ‘attractive ‘ but ne’er rather makes it, as they really good cognize, which is why they like her so much ” ( 497 ) . Last but non least, there was “ Queenie ” . “ She did n’t look around, non this queen, she merely walked directly on easy, on these long white Prima donna legs. She came down a small difficult on her heels, as if she did n’t walk in her au naturel pess that much ” ( 497 ) . He had nil better else to make than to twenty-four hours woolgather about the three immature ladies, and chew over what to make next. “ From the 3rd slot I look directly up this aisle to the meat counter, and I watched them all the manner ” ( 498 ) . It was a little town with non much to make. Sammy was non seeking to do a calling out of working at the A & A ; P supermarket.
From the minute the misss walked into the supermarket Sammy was look intoing them out. The ladies were walking towards the meat section, being led by “ Queenie ” of class. They stopped and asked McMahon a inquiry about somethings whereabouts in the supermarket. The minute the misss turned and started walking off from McMahon, Sammy noticed that McMahon was look intoing them out from caput to toe. Sammy said, “ Poor childs, I began to experience sorry for them, they could n’t assist it ” ( 498 ) . In this minute, Sammy ‘s feelings for the misss changed, and he started to sympathise with them. He forms a different position of the misss. He feels sorry for them because of the manner McMahon is goggling at them. Up to this point he has been looking at the two misss and “ Queenie ” the same manner as McMahon did. Maybe Sammy did non see it that manner merely by looking at himself. He noticed how McMahon “ sized up their articulations ” ( 498 ) , and he did non O.K. .
The misss make it to the cheque out aisle with their Herring Snacks. Sammy returns to look into the bites out for the immature ladies. Lengel is Sammy ‘s director, who is besides a friend of Sammy ‘s household. Sammy spotted Lengel, as he made his manner over to the cheque out aisle and the misss. Sammy instantly starts believing “ oh great, here we go ” . “ Then everybody ‘s fortune begins to run out. Lengel comes in from higgling with a truck full of chous on the batch and is approximately to scurry into the door marked MANAGER behind which he hides all twenty-four hours when the misss touch his oculus. Lengel ‘s pretty drab, Teachs Sunday school and the remainder, but he does n’t lose that much. He comes over and says, ‘Girls, this is n’t the beach ‘ . Lengel continues to reiterate himself over and over once more. The lone clip person repeats themselves, is when 1 does non understand what the talker is stating. This is non the instance. “ Queenie ” and the misss understood what Lengel told them. “ But this is n’t the beach ( 499 ) . ” The misss were about out of the shop. They were non on this immense shopping fling. “ We were n’t making any shopping. We merely came in for one thing ( 499 ) . ” Lengel would non go forth the state of affairs entirely, he kept forcing the issue. “ That makes no difference, we want you decently dressed when you come in here ( 499 ) . ” After reasoning with Queenie, Lengel throws in the white flag. “ Girls, I do n’t desire to reason with you. After this semen in here with your shoulders covered. It ‘s our policy ( 500 ) . ”
Sammy does non O.K. at all. He was offended by the manner Lengel treated the misss. Sammy feels they were treated to harsh. “ Policy is what the top bananas want. What the others want is juvenile delinquency ( 499 ) . ” As, “ Queenie and Plaid and Big Tall Goony-Goony ” , were go forthing the supermarket Sammy decided to discontinue. He thought it was best to stand up for what you believe in. “ You did n’t hold to abash them ( 500 ) . ” He did see for a minute what he was making was incorrect, but he talked himself out of it. “ But it seems to me that one time you begin a gesture it ‘s fatal non to travel through with it ( 500 ) . ” Lengel was seeking to speak him out of it. He was seeking to do Sammy believe about what he was repairing to make. Lengel said, “ You ‘ll experience this for the remainder of your life ( 500 ) . ” Sammy thought about that for a 2nd but he “ remembered how he made that pretty girl bloom makes me so scrunchy inside ( 500 ) . ”
Some people may reason Sammy was a true hero. He displayed a true act of gallantry that twenty-four hours in the supermarket, and stood up for what he believed in. Sammy did non O.K. of the manner everyone was goggling at the misss, and the manner Lengel embarrassed. He felt protective of them. Sammy made the determination to discontinue his occupation based on what he thought was the right thing to make. However, Sammy got himself into this state of affairs. Sammy quit so suddenly. He did non believe of the effects. If he hated his occupation that much he could hold given them a two hebdomad notice. Sammy did non brood on what type of emphasis this would set on his parents, or how difficult it would be to happen another occupation after discontinuing on a caprice. He let his endocrines get the best of him. The misss gave him a manner out, gave him an alibi to discontinue the A & A ; P. Sammy acted jejunely, which is why he lost his occupation.
Sammy showed throughout the narrative some heroic traits. His artlessness and immatureness got the best of him. When Sammy left the supermarket he realizes what merely happened. “ My tummy sort of fell as I felt how hard the universe was traveling to be to me afterlife ( 501 ) . ” Sammy comes to the realisation that he has to turn up now. And that being an grownup is difficult work. He is no longer working for friend of the household. That he is non a kid any longer, “ My white shirt that my female parent ironed the dark before ( 500 ) . ” And Sammy did non desire to be like his coworkers. Sammy did non repent the determination he made. He wanted to accomplish bigger ends in his life than merely being a shop director at the “ A & A ; P ” . Sammy quit his occupation because of his artlessness and deficiency of adulthood.
