Smoking is an expensive habit. People who smoke cigarettes can spend as much as $2,500 a year on them. Smokers’ claim that it helps relax them and it releases stress but the negative aspects of smoking outweigh the positive. Smoking is a health hazard for smokers and non-smokers. Smokers should have the right to choose what to do with their own health but they should respect non-smokers. Many people believe that there are good and bad outcomes from smoking. I believe that smoking is bad and that it should be banned. Many people think that smoking is a sign of coolness but in fact it damages the body.
Cigarettes contain nicotine which is an addictive substance and that is why it is hard for smokers to stop smoking. Smoking can damage the lungs, the heart, and causes other diseases. The most important reason to ban smoking is the effects on smokers and second hand smokers. About 400,000 Americans die each year from diseases cause by cigarette smoking. The biggest killers are lung cancer, other smoking related cancers, and heart disease. Smoking cigarettes causes more deaths than AIDS, illegal drug use, alcohol abuse, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders.
If there are non-smokers around smokers, they breathe the same air and that is not good. Non-smokers even have a higher rate of attaining diseases when they are around cigarette smoke. When children breath in cigarette smoke, they have an increase risk for childhood illnesses such as asthma and ear infections. Smoking also affects pregnancy and newborn children. Cigarette smoking and smokeless tobacco use during pregnancy pose serious risks to fetal heath. Many people do not know what ingredients are in cigarettes and why they may be harmful to them.
The money spent on smoking is one of the reasons why we need to ban smoking. “In 2008, the price of a pack of cigarettes ranged from $4 to more than $7. In addition, the Center for Disease Control estimates that, on average, every pack of cigarettes smoked costs each state as much as $16 when health prices and lost productivity are considered. Banning or restricting smoking eliminates (or at least reduces) these costs”(lockson). Spending money on smoking is too much and leads to nothing, and there are no benefits that people can get from smoking.
Smoking can hit personal finances and smokers are burning their money for no reason. Instead of using money to get cigarettes, people can donate to non-government organizations to wipe out poverty and change people’s lives. Smoking is a major factor that is destroying the environment. Smoking cigarettes is bad for the air. People who do not smoke have to breathe the bad air around the smokers. Smoking needs to be banned in public to let other people breathe the fresh air. Most Americans are exposed to outdoor and indoor air that can cause cancer and other serious health problems.
Smoking is a serious problem that needs to be taken care of. If we want a strong environment, clean environment, and a good public health, we need to ban smoking once and for all. Many people believe that smoking is good in many ways. They also think that smoking carries more benefits than not smoking. Smoking will help you make friends. Smokers congregate in very small areas and by doing this brings on a friendship. They exchange stories, exchange news, and enrich knowledge. Smokers all have something in common. They are discriminated against, and thus they quickly bond together.
Smoking will reduce stress and anxiety. The calming effects of a constant nicotine supply in the bloodstream will reduce the amount of stress and anxiety that can cause serious heart conditions and ulcers. Smokers always have an excuse to leave. When a smoker wants to smoke they can just step outside and have a cigarette. They can even lie that they do not have anymore cigarettes and they leave. Smoking exercises your lungs, arms, and builds manual dexterity. Smoker’s arms are continuously worked out by the up and down movement. It takes good lungs to smoke well. Lighting a cigarette requires a certain amount of skill.
Non-smokers would never know that skill. Many people believe that smoking is bad in many ways. It can lead to diseases such as emphysema and lung cancer. Second hand smoking kills thousands of people every year. “A ban eliminates secondhand smoke, which puts everyone around a smoker at risk. This includes non-smokers who work or live in unhealthy environments, such as waitresses at bars, and children of parents who smoke”(Lockson). Nicotine in cigarettes is addicting and makes it difficult to quit smoking. Cigarettes contain over seven hundred chemical additives.
Some of the chemicals are heavy metals, humectants, casting agents, pesticides, and insecticides added into the cigarettes. Tar, carbon, and nicotine are the well-known chemicals in cigarettes. Tar is released when the cigarette is lit and then the tobacco begins to burn. Tar is very harmful because it collects in the lungs and it contributes a great deal to cancer and respiratory diseases. The carbon in the cigarette is also extremely dangerous. The carbon in the cigarette binds with the hemoglobin in the blood stream. The hemoglobin does not allow the red blood cells to carry and transport oxygen throughout the human body.
Nicotine is a colorless, odorless oily substance that occurs in nature. Nicotine is the chemical that makes cigarettes additive. Nicotine damages the brain by opening up the receptors in it. When smokers sleep at night the nicotine level drops and that is why they need to smoke first thing in the morning. Smoking has two kinds of effects, long term and short-term efforts. The short-term effects usually happen after a few years of smoking and they are coughing, wheezing, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, phlegm production, bad breath, decreased physical fitness and reduced lung function.
The long term effects which happen after years and years of smoking and they are emphysema, heart disease, pregnancy complications, facial wrinkles and cancer. The different forms of cancer caused by smoking are very large. The different forms are lung, pancreatic, cervix, larynx, mouth, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and increased chance of breast cancer. Smoking is also extremely dangerous for an unborn fetus. Second hand smoke is almost as bad as actually smoking a cigarette. Second hand smoke contains all of the toxins a cigarette does.
There are two forms of second hand smoke; they are sidestream and mainstream. Mainstream smoke is smoke being blown out from the smoker and sidestream smoke is smoke wafting from a smoldering cigarette. The toxins that fill a house with second hand smoke are the same as filling a house with the two highly dangerous chemicals, asbestos and radon. “Smoking fills the air with harmful pollutants that cause unpleasant smells and discoloration in, furniture and home decorations. A smoking ban would eliminate this and save the costs of filtering and cleaning”(Lockson).
Respiratory diseases happen to children because of second hand smoke. They include bronchitis, croup, pneumonia, chronic cough, wheezing and asthma. Smoking does nothing for the human race and should be completely banned completely. I believe that smoking is bad and that it should be banned. I think the world would be a better place if there were a ban on smoking. People might live longer and all their monies would go to something useful. There is nothing good about smoking even though smokers claim it is. I hope in the near future there would be a banned for smoking in all fifty states of the United States.
