Then the sheriff lets her go, but she leaves town anyways because blacks were prohibited from most things at this time. As in most love stories there is attraction, love, trouble, pain, distance and so on. In his opening night review, Atikison called the book’s adaptation “intelligently made”, and the production one of “unimpeachable skill and taste.
The critics were immediately enthusiastic, and the show was a great popular success, running a year and a half, for a total of 572 performances. Most in part by its nature and as being a new genre on stage. Also in 1951 MGM made into a film, and changed many aspects of the story.
