As well shed light on the Ethics regarding the use of Stem Cells. To include but not limited to the debate regarding the procedure is immorally wrong (ethically speaking), the death of unborn embryos, and the socially viewed standpoint.

Lastly we’ll discuss the stem cell pros as one newly discovered alternative that could be used besides unborn embryos. The importance of newly found methods are further being researched today and other alternatives could potentially be found without the use of embryonic stem cells. Stem Cell Research Stem Cell Research has had much hysteria over the effects and implications as to its use in our world today and possibly one of the most delicately debated topics of our time. Let’s further review the few areas regarding Stem Cell Research.

First we’ll discuss the stem cell basics including the types of significance, the ability to repair the body as cure diseases. Secondly, we’ll discuss the ethics regarding the use of stem cell’s, immoral repercussions, and social point of view. Lastly we’ll discuss many of the pros and an alternative means to human embryos. The outcome of stem cell research could one day save lives; thus the in-depth look at different views could bring more a proactive approach to such a sensitive topic of today.

The use of stem cells should be on the mind of every scientist since this research is valuable to our everyday lives, and to the future of technology in medical research. The idea of using stem cells itself can lead to amazing benefits to mankind and has the potential to set a new age of advancement in medicine. The stem cells have the potential to develop into many different cell types in the body during early life and growth; also stem cells aid the tissues as an internal repair system. Suzanne, 2009) Essentially when a stem cell divides, the new cell has the likelihood of becoming another type of cell with a specialized function, for example, muscle cell, red blood cell, or a brain cell from that damaged cell type. (Suzanne, 2009) The usage of these cells has the potential to cure diseases and rid damaged cells from the human body. Stem cells can also be distinguished by two important characteristics, renewing themselves by cell division and sometimes after long periods of inactivity. Suzanne, 2009) Recently it has been found that there are two types of stem cells, Embryonic and non-embryonic “Somatic” or “Adult” stem cells. (Suzanne, 2009)

Embryonic stem cells derive from unborn embryos (from conception to eight weeks gestation) and by means of acceptance by the original cell has unlimited potential to distinguish itself into any of the over 200 cell types within the body. Nonetheless, the use of stem cells has the potential to fight disease such as heart disease, diabetes, and even certain cancers. Attara, 2006) Eventually scientists will gain more scientific support; this could prove to be essentially beneficial to mankind in the future. Let’s further continue towards why it is debated. The use of stem cells in research is still very much debated from an ethical and immoral standpoint. Majority of the disagreement with stem cell research is from the religious and social conservatives who are pro-life. (Robinson, 2010) Most of the “pro-lifers” think pre-embryo’s from which embryonic stem cells are removed harbor human life, and also that the procedure of extracting the cells somewhat destroys the person. Robinson, 2010) Awhile at the same time others do not think the same way. On another note, some would suggest it’s wrongful to kill unborn embryos; reasoning is because that early life is present. This leads to immoral implications. One item of concern, for example, could be the handling of surplus embryos in fertility clinics by a means of In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) the pro-lifers have concerns over the surplus amount of embryos that would go unused this could be viewed as wasted human life from stem cell research.

In the United States the government has had involvement that includes funding for research such as 1 Million dollars for a program called the Snowflakes program, which allows the process of “Embryo Adoption”. (Robinson, 2010) The scope of different opinions involving the extraction means of stem cell research is vast and pro-lifers have vigorously debated their part for sometime. Quite possibly with different points of views from all angles such alternative means could come from means of obtaining the stem cells. Now let’s continue to some of the alternatives means of stem cells other than embryos.

With stem cell research there is clouded insight with cause and effect. Some would even suggest complications could happen but most would conclude some positive effects around the idea of using stem cells. Many of the pros of using stem cell research would aid in better treatment and could cure a number of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. (Craig, 2008) Not only that but such gains could be gained by a means economically for society in general and could include social benefits by better treatment of many diseases.

Much of the controversy revolving around the use of stem cells is that majority of researchers use embryonic stem cells as their main method research. (Craig, 2008) However just one newly discovered alternative is that scientists have found Amniotic fluid to be a perfect alternative to embryonic stem cells. Much that is known already is that, amniotic fluid is the fluid that nourishes the fetus in the womb. Just recently they have found out that the fluid also contains stem cells. “Amniotic fluid yields,” 2012) The process involved was the cells were grown on a gelatinous protein mixture in a lab, in doing so they would reprogram the cells by adding a drug called valproic acid. (“Amniotic fluid yields,” 2012) In time the cells were able to grow into functioning cells such as a liver, bone, or nerve cells. (“Amniotic fluid yields,” 2012) Even though this newly discovered alternative was just established who knows where this new method may take us.

The ability for humans to cure disease and regenerate cells could be right around the corner in the not to distant future. In closing, overall controversy will continue that the use of stem cell research is unethical and immorally wrong. However, today scientists are finding alternatives to embryonic stem cells, this allows us to go beyond our close minded thinking in such a sensitive subject. Possibly one day in the future stem cells could be used to save people’s lives, cure diseases or even regenerate organs. Through proactive thinking and social acceptance of stem cell research, as scientists expand their research they could reshape our technological advancement in medicine to unimaginable horizons never before seen.
