Technology has become so advanced that it can’t be separate from people lives and it has an absolute control over their lives. Technology has an impact on society. In “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr argues how technology and the internet have both positives and negatives impact on people. He uses anecdotes, credible sources, and research studies to show that with so much information available it has minimized the ability of reading on their own and understanding the meaning. On the other hand, in “To Siri, With Love” by Judith Newman, talks about her autism son’s friendship, Gus, with an assistant from technology. She explores the effect Siri has on her son’s life. Moreover, in “Time and Distance” by Eula Biss, explains the intervention of telephone poles and how it led to lynching, which is a racist act. Like Carr, Biss also explores the good and bad technology has on society. Technology is beneficial because it makes boring tasks easier and saves time, it affects a person interaction and thinking with others. However, technology can cause concerns. It also has a negative impact on society since it causes isolation and knowing the history can change people’s thinking on how technology is made.
People are becoming inactive using technology-the Internet- which provides all information rather than having to use their own thinking skills. They would rather skim a reading or use Google to find the information needed rather than contemplate ideas of their own. For example, in Carr’s essay he use a credible resource from Mary-anne Wolf which states, “the Net, a style that puts “efficiency” and “immediacy” above all else, may be weakening our capacity for the kind of deep reading that emerged when an earlier technology, the printing press, made long and complex works of prose commonplace” (327). In this quote, Carr proves a point that using the internet is making people lazy to think about what they’re reading
