The play, comedy of manners, The Importance of Being Ernest by Oscar Wilde is set in 1890’s with the action split between London and Hertfordshire England. It could be assumed that the play is meant to take place in the 1890’s as the play was written and first produced during this time period and it must be assumed as the script simply states present for the well as the fact that the language used in the play would hint at it being set in a time of more formality. One could also assume that this play takes pace over the course of just a few days . the play has its action split between Algernon’s flat in London, in half moon street, w, London, for the whole of the first act and jack’s manor house, Woolton, Hertfordshire, for the second and third act. This separation does help to lead to some of the issues.
