Unit 2- Working in the Science industry
As a specialist lab, I have chosen to do Microbiology lab. Microbiology means that it is the study of microorganisms which is also called microbes. Microorganisms are unicellular organisms that are infectious and are hard to see. This includes eukaryote cells which are organisms with a nucleus such as fungi and protists and prokaryote cells such as bacteria. This is useful as Microbiology labs can help detect those infections and as a result, more infections will be detected so doctors and nurses will be able to treat the disease and patients will improve their knowledge on these types of microbes.
In my Microbiology lab design as drawn below and numbered, I have included:
Slip- resistant flooring.
Tables for students that includes a safety shield in the middle, water taps and gas taps. This section of the room should only be used for practical’s only.
Autoclave and water baths been placed on the side of the desks, which are attached to the student tables so that they can use them.
On the other side of the tables, microscopes been placed.
Electrical sockets placed in both desks.
Locked cabinets that have chemical substances inside it.
Desk for teachers that includes a water tap and gas tap.
10) Entrance door.
11) Exit door acts as an emergency door as well.
12) Lab coat hanger
13) Safety glasses storage.
14) Storage for equipment’s e.g. clamp, petri dish, tongs, Bunsen burner and more.
15) Chairs with desk arms on the other side of the room. This allows students to use laptops or their books to write in the lesson.
16) Fire extinguisher and fire blanket used in emergencies.
17) Fridge for storage.
18) Wash station.
20) Emergency stop button.
24) Recycling bin for non-chemical usage.
25) Chemical usage bin with a hazard sign.
Non- specialist lab:
A non-specialist lab is often considered as a school lab where it has limited things, not like Microbiology lab. Non- specialist labs would have standard equipment that is only needed for practical’s that students will be carrying out so, for example, they will have types of equipment such as Bunsen burner, test tubes, clamp etc. Some equipment’s in the Microbiology lab is also used in the non-specialist lab.
In my Non-specialist lab, I have included:
P3: Microbiology lab:
Slip- resistant flooring.
D2: Tables that are separated from each other and includes: Electrical sockets in the corner and water taps positioned in the middle. The tables also include drawers which is used for storage.
Locked cupboards that contain harsh substances and on the surface table it has gas taps for usage.
Exist door acts as an emergency door as well.
10) Classroom board.
11) Storage for equipment’s e.g. clamp, petri dish, goggles, Bunsen burner and more.
Desk for teachers that includes a water tap.
Emergency stop button.
Recycling bin for non-chemical usage.
Chemical usage bin with a hazard sign.
