Probably the most notorious rivals of fifteenth century art in Italy were the infamous Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. While both artists seem alike in many ways, there were many things that set them apart from one another, making them very different.
Both artists were very talented, and had an ambition to paint. However, they both had a rough upbringing, and led harsh lives. They had went through childhood without one or both of their parents. They were both skilled in architecture, helping their careers in different ways. Both artists were mentored – however by different people – which helped give each artist a better insight to their work. Both Michelangelo and da Vinci made innovative advancements to the Renaissance age, Michelangelo creating the modern staircase and and da Vinci created many architectural monuments.
While their legacies and upbringings are quite similar, there are many more characteristics about each artist that make them different. The were both rivals, and da Vinci had the ambition to pursue his career completely based on art’s sake, yet Michelangelo was partially in it for the money. Michelangelo was a sculptor, poet, and engineer, meanwhile da Vinci was a scientist, inventor, and philosopher. Michelangelo struggles with mathematics and languages, while da Vinci thrived in mathematics, and applied it to his artwork. Leonardo proved to be more of a genius than Michelangelo, excelling in anatomy, zoology, botany, geology, optics, aerodynamics, etc.
Both Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci created works of art that were paintings, drawings, and sculpture. Michelangelo did fresco artwork, which is painting a mural upon fresh or wet lime plaster. Leonardo did mural, which is basically painting on a wall or ceiling. Michelangelo did relief work, which is sculptures embedded in walls, which is something Leonardo did not do.
Clearly, two of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance are both have many things in common and things that make them different. These characteristics helped get each artist to be as well known as they are today, their legacies influencing may other artists.
