Was Christopher Columbus a Success or Failure

October 16, 2017 General Studies

Christopher Columbus was an explorer, colonizer, and navigator, born in the Republic of Genoa, in north-western Italy. His goal in life was to find new land and riches, such as silk, jewels and spices, for Spain. Christopher Columbus was possibly one of the greatest explorers ever known. He achieved a lot in life for example: discovering an island which is now called Jamaica and setting up a colony called Hispaniola, discovering South America and opening up a pathway between the “old world” (Portugal, Spain, Italy etc. and the Newfoundland (America) therefore altering life evermore right across the Atlantic. Columbus failed at a lot of his objectives in life such as he never actually discovered a new route to the East; he was cruel to a lot of Native American Indians, with slavery, warfare, and inhumane acts Columbus was eventually forced out of America by the Indians. Jamaicans in Hispaniola (A Colony created by Columbus) were starting to rebel as they had a shortage of food.

This was reported back to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, who ruled over Spain at the time, they then ordered that Christopher be arrested and brought back to Spain immediately. Columbus died aged fifty-five sad, miserable and lonely as his wife died shortly after his son was born. Columbus believed he had failed in life as he never reached his objective to travel west and arrive in the east.

Columbus succeeded at a lot in his life time (for the times in which he lived). He travelled the world on ships fraught with danger and re-discovered America a land which is now one of the worlds most inhabited spots. America’s permanent population is now around 307,006,550. Christopher Columbus’ battles against the seas came to an end when he was brutally murdered along with forty other men in a fight involving the natives of the new world.
